Wales

Let's play Transport Trumps in Wales.

Problem 1: Newport's motorway is congested

Road solution: The Welsh Assembly wants to spend more than £750 million to build a 15-mile, six-lane motorway around the south of Newport. The road would cross the Gwent Levels, including several Sites of Special Scientific Interest. It would generate many new trips, increasing CO2, traffic and pollution.

Reader's suggestion: Andy Walker wants new and improved rail links in order to reduce traffic and congestion, including a station at Newport East Parkway which would be a popular station for commuting to work and school, and a station at St Julian's to relieve the M4 and dual carriageway routes into Cwmbran, Abergavenny and beyond. He also wants smartcard ticking that lets people move between buses and trains, regardless of the operator, and 'ticket stops' so people can easily buy tickets.

Problem 2: There's too much traffic in Llandeilo and Ffairfach

Community improvement = 0
Environmental sustainability = 2
Cost-effectiveness = 2
Bottom image
Road solution: The Welsh Assembly Government wants to build a road to take traffic away from Llandeilo and Ffairfach, Carmarthenshire. The new road would cross the Towy valley floodplain adjacent to Ffairfach, aggravating an already serious flood problem. Its proposed five-metre-high embankment and bridge would cut straight across one of Wales's most photographed and painted views. The road would sever the two towns, requiring 400 school children to cross it each day.

Do you know of other proposed road schemes in Wales that could be trumped? If so, we want to hear about them!

In the real world of Transport Trumps, transport schemes are assessed through a cost-benefit analysis. We think the analysis is flawed because roads always come out as Top Trumps.
