South East

Let's play Transport Trumps in the South East.

Problem: There’s a lot of traffic in Hastings

Road solution: East Sussex County Council wants to spend £99 million to build a road running from the A259 in Bexhill to the B2092 Queensway in Hastings. The road would ruin the beautiful Combe Haven Valley and countryside on the edge of Hastings and Bexhill, encourage car-dependent development and decrease air quality in the surrounding area.

Walking and cycling solution: Local people are pushing for two major 'greenway' pedestrian/cycle links to be built, along with improved bus information systems and a new railway station at Glyne Gap to serve a traffic-generating shopping area. These proposals would be less than 10% of the cost of the new road.

**Result: Walking and cycling solution trumps road solution!**

Do you know of other proposed road schemes in the South East that could be trumped? If so, we want to hear about them!

In the real world of Transport Trumps, transport schemes are assessed through a cost-benefit analysis. We think the analysis is flawed because roads always come out as Top Trumps.
