Transport Trumps

London

Let's play Transport Trumps in London.

Problem: Traffic is expected to grow in London

Road solution: Transport for London wants to build a £500-million, 6-lane motorway-style bridge over the Thames, linking Becton and Thamesmead. The road would increase traffic, CO2 and pollution as up to 12,000 vehicles per hour cross the bridge. It would also discourage walking, cycling and public transport.

Cable car solution: The Green Party and transport campaigners have suggested a cable car could be built across the Thames. The cable car could carry 5,000 people an hour across the river, helping to reduce traffic and its associated noise and emissions.

**Result: Cable car solution trumps road solution!**

Do you know of other proposed road schemes in London that could be trumped? If so, we want to hear about them!

In the real world of Transport Trumps, transport schemes are assessed through a cost-benefit analysis. We think the analysis is flawed because roads always come out as Top Trumps.
