Responding to the RAC Foundation report published today, What Went Wrong? British Highway Development before the Motorways, Campaign for Better Transport’s roads and climate campaigner Rebecca Lush Blum said:
"With traffic and carbon emissions rising we agree with the RAC Foundation that the Government’s road policy is a mess. However, the RAC Foundation’s solution to build more roads will just take us further back in time and reduce people’s travel choices at a huge financial cost. To tackle climate change we need to reduce traffic growth by investing more in alternatives to the car, giving people more traveling choices. Announcements this week to encourage car-sharing on motorway hard shoulders show the Government is also responding to the reality that we cannot build our way out of congestion."
