Experience: I’ve been working on the Freight on Rail campaign since 2001, before which I had a variety of support and management roles in PR and marketing in the computer industry. At that time I was involved with a lot of community campaigning, including campaigning against airport expansion, and I was a litigant at the European Court of Human Rights. When a campaign I was involved with – to save my local swimming pool in Richmond – was successful, I realised that it really is possible to make a difference, which inspired me to join the Campaign for Better Transport.
Why I work for the Campaign for Better Transport: When I joined the organisation congestion was reaching crazy levels, cars were disrupting communities, walking and cycling were threatened, and aviation was getting out of hand: it was clear that we’d got the transport balance wrong, and something needed to be done about it.
Biggest transport gripe: The lack of proper cycle paths. We need to tempt people out of their cars and onto their bikes, which in turn will make cycling safer.
Favourite means of transport: Cycling is an amazing way to travel. You can go so far, for so little energy and so little money. And you can really engage with where you are – smell the smells and hear the sounds.
