For several years the Highways Section of Durham County Council has been crusading for a so-called 'Northern Relief Road' across the protected Green Belt near the centre of Durham. To cap it all, one of the most destructive road schemes in recent times could now be funded by the British Government's new Transport Innovation Fund, a scheme sold as helping reduce traffic and protecting the environment.
The road would run close to the centre of Durham City, passing on concrete stilts half a mile north of the Cathedral and in the process vandalising one of the greatest panoramas of ecclesiastical architecture in the world. It would pass right next to the much visited gardens of Crook Hall manor house and the ancient monument of Kepier Hospital on the River Wear. A possible 'outer' route has the road passing through a deeply secluded area of ancient woodland on either side of the river and then through a local nature reserve.
North East Combined Transport Activists Roundtable (NECTAR) is an umbrella body and a forum in which organisations with an interest in sustainable transport can develop a co-ordinated view on contemporary transport issues. NECTAR provides opportunity for the exchange of news, studies and information.
Covering the same geographical area, NECTAR provides a single, co-ordinated voice for dialogue with the Government Office for the North East, the North East Assembly, One North East, the Association of North East Councils and similar bodies concerned with transport and related policies at a regional, national and European level.
Membership of NECTAR is open to organisations which:
- Support the use of sustainable transport and sustainable changes to the transport infrastructure
- Broadly support integrated transport and land use policies which reduce the need to travel
- Promote better provision for public transport, walking and cycling
- Seek to minimise environmental impacts and maximise accessibility, safety, good health and quality of life for all
Current active membership includes Campaign for Better Transport, CPRE, CTC, Friends of the Earth, Living Streets, railfuture - and several rail user groups.
NECTAR is one of a national network of Transport Activists' Roundtables supported by Campaign for Better Transport.
