Roads are funded and built in different ways. Local roads are the responsibility of the local authority and non-local roads the responsibility of the Highways Agency.

This guide only talks about trying to stop local authority and Highways Agency schemes in England. For roads outside England, you might be able to get help from Friends of the Earth Cymru, Transform Scotland or Friends of the Earth Northern Ireland.

Very rarely, a road is built by a private developer. If you are fighting plans for a private developer road, get some help with the process from your local planning officer.
