How to create a Home Zone

Successes

Following a long campaign by Campaign for Better transport and the Children’s Play Council, Homes Zones were given the go-ahead by the Government in 2000. The Transport Act 2000 allows local authorities to designate any suite of roads they are responsible for as a Home Zone.

A Home Zone is a place where the street is redefined as a ‘social space’ in which people, not cars, take priority. Cars travel slowly and parking is redesigned to maximise the amount of space for people. Parents can let their children play in the street or visit friends across the road, knowing they will be safe from the traffic.
