If you're wanting to build a group to fight a problem, or reinvigorate a flagging one, try to get the group to meet as many of the points on the following checklist as possible.
A great campaigning group is:
- Enthusiastic
- Inclusive, open to new members
- Innovative, thinking creatively about how to campaign
- Informative, sending regular updates to group members and the outside world about progress on the campaign
- Positive, coming up with good alternative solutions to a problem
- Multifunctional. Good groups share tasks across members
- Diverse, with members who have different skills that allow you to tackle the problem in many ways; for example, though press releases, fundraising, technical reports and events
- Quick. Reacts quickly and can seize opportunities, especially in press work
- Forward thinking. For example, if you have a public inquiry coming up, you will need to begin fundraising months in advance
- Connected, working with other interest groups
