Poor stations

This list comes out of a survey we ran in August 2007 to find train stations in the country with weak links to other modes of transport and to city centres. Is there a station you’d like added to this list? Tell us about it.

Respondents told us many improvements were needed:

  • Only 29% said that the station's bus timetables were clear and accurate
  • Only 12% said that the bus timetables generally connected with the train timetable
  • A staggering 60% said that they would not feel safe leaving their bikes at the station
  • 62% said that there was not a safe cycle route to the station
  • Only 36% felt that the paths to the station were safe, well-lit and free of obstacles
  • 61% said that the town centre and nearby facilities were not well-signposted from the station entrance/exit

Since our survey, the Government has agreed to pilot station travel plans, which will improve access by public transport, walking and cycling to 31 stations. Find out more about station travel plans.

"Chelmsford Station in Essex is small, cramped and can't cope with the number of London commuters. The ticket barriers are frequently broken which causes a huge build-up of passengers. The steps are too narrow to allow for more than one up / one down and during peak times the queue backs up on to the platform: I have to work out which carriage to get into so that I can get out parallel with the steps in order not to be caught in too long a queue. The waiting facilities are also pitiful. I don't get much for my £2,940 a year" - Nathan.
