Spending Review 2010

Let's protect vital bus services

Buses are vital for a healthy economy:

  • They provide low-cost, low-carbon transport links to work, education, health, leisure and shopping
  • They are the safest, greenest and most used form of public transport, with 5 billion passenger journeys a year
  • They are vital for the 25% of Britons who don't have a car, and for many young, elderly and disabled travellers

The Government is reviewing the future of the only direct national funding for bus services – the Bus Service Operators Grant – and may scrap it completely. We say this would be a disaster.

The Bus Service Operators Grant is a rebate to bus operators on the fuel duty they pay. Scrapping it would lead to:

  • Bus service cuts
  • Fare increases
  • Job losses in the bus industry and related industries
  • Unemployment for people who can no longer access work
  • More car journeys, congestion and CO2 emissions

We're fighting this terrible threat to buses.
