Campaigners welcome new funds for city transport

20 November 2017

Campaign for Better Transport responds today to the Government's launch of a £1.7 billion Transforming Cities Fund to improve transport links and promote local growth within city regions.

Bridget Fox, Sustainable Transport Campaign for Better Transport said: "We strongly welcome this announcement of new money supporting vital city transport links. Projects such as the Midland Metro Black Country extension can transform the local economy, connecting people to jobs and boosting town centre businesses.

"This is a real opportunity for urban leaders to invest in better public transport and active travel, moving away from outdated car-dependent developments and towards greener, healthier, more liveable cities.

"We look forward to a similar package for rural areas, including support for vital bus services, so that all communities have a chance to share in the benefits of the Government's Clean Growth strategy."

  • Campaign for Better Transport has published an Alternative Transport Budget, a set of alternative proposals for transport taxation and spending. We believe the Chancellor should support everyday transport - local road maintenance, local bus services etc - ahead of big new roads. The Government also needs to do more to clean up our polluted air by making it easier and cheaper for people to travel by public transport, by bike or walking, and to choose greener cars.
